PM Modi, Putin Revive ‘Car Diplomacy’ Moment In Bishkek

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin once again displayed their warm rapport in Bishkek.

After concluding bilateral talks on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit on Monday evening, both leaders travelled together to the opening ceremony of the World Nomad Games at Bishkek Arena. The Games officially opened in Bishkek on August 31.

The gesture echoed their journey during the SCO Leaders’ Summit in Tianjin, China, last September.

Analysts dubbed the recurring practice ‘car diplomacy’, which attracted worldwide attention on social media.

During his meeting with Putin, PM Modi reaffirmed India’s support for efforts to secure peace in Ukraine. He called for an end to prolonged conflict, stressing that peace remains essential for humanity.

“Every day spent in war pushes humanity backwards,” PM Modi said. He urged both sides to move towards an end to the war and described the message as a call of humanity.

The Prime Minister invoked the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi and Gautama Buddha, saying disputes should be settled peacefully and swiftly.

PM Modi looked forward to welcoming Putin and the Russian delegation to the BRICS Summit in New Delhi next month, saying the visit would deepen bilateral ties and strengthen BRICS cooperation.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met Putin in Moscow on August 24 and delivered a personal message from PM Modi.

Jaishankar reviewed cooperation under the 27th IRIGC-TEC, covering trade, economic ties, science, technology and culture.

Putin welcomed the growing partnership, citing rising trade and cooperation in energy, fertilisers, nuclear power and high-tech sectors.

Jaishankar said economic cooperation had strengthened significantly and highlighted the robust India-Russia partnership.
