Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said India envisions the Indian Ocean as an ‘Ocean of Opportunity’, where maritime security, sustainable development and economic prosperity advance together.
PM Modi said at a joint press conference in Victoria with Seychelles President Patrick Herminie that regional security and prosperity depend on stronger cooperation among nations. He said the Indian Ocean is a shared home, and India’s MAHASAGAR vision is based on trust, respect and collective progress, ensuring economic growth supports maritime security and equal partnerships.
PM Modi thanked President Herminie for the warm welcome and for conferring the ‘Guardian of the Blue Horizon’ award, calling it an honour for 1.4 billion Indians and dedicating it to countries fighting climate change. He said his visit marks Seychelles’ 50th Independence anniversary and 50 years of diplomatic ties, adding that India and Seychelles have strengthened their long-standing friendship into a trusted partnership for development and public welfare.
PM Modi said both leaders discussed ways to make bilateral economic cooperation more resilient and future-ready. He announced that India and Seychelles would continue exploring new opportunities for businesses in both countries while enhancing connectivity to strengthen trade and deepen links with East Africa and the wider Indian Ocean region.
PM Modi said digital public infrastructure can bridge distances and improve governance. He added that India will share its successful experience with Seychelles to support its digital transformation and strengthen cooperation.
Reaffirming India’s commitment to its maritime neighbours, PM Modi further said stronger regional partnerships, sustainable development and shared prosperity remain central to India’s vision for the Indian Ocean, describing it as a region of peace, progress and opportunity for all.
