What Is Measles? Symptoms, Causes, Prevention And Why Vaccination Matters

Measles is a highly contagious virus, mostly affecting children, but anyone unvaccinated or never infected can catch it at any age.

Even though it’s preventable, measles still breaks out worldwide, so staying informed and getting vaccinated matter more than ever.

The measles virus spreads easily when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks, releasing tiny droplets into the air.

Since the virus spreads easily, one infected person can quickly infect many others, especially in crowded places.

Symptoms usually appear 10 to 14 days after exposure. They often begin with a high fever, runny nose, cough, red and watery eyes, and a sore throat.

A few days later, a red rash appears, usually starting on the face before spreading to the rest of the body.

Some people may also develop small white spots inside the mouth, known as Koplik spots, which are a common early sign of measles.

Measles usually clears up in weeks, but it can cause severe complications, especially for young kids, pregnant women, or those with weak immunity.

The most effective way to prevent measles is through vaccination.

Doctors recommend the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccine as part of routine childhood immunisation because it provides strong protection.

Practising good hygiene – like covering your mouth, washing hands often, and steering clear of sick people – helps stop measles from spreading.

Although vaccination can prevent measles, people should never take it lightly.
