Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his New Zealand counterpart, Christopher Luxon, jointly visited a sports innovation exhibition in Auckland on Saturday, where they viewed a range of advanced sporting equipment and emerging technologies. They also engaged with accomplished athletes and officials involved in elite sports programmes, underscoring the importance of greater collaboration in the sector.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said PM Modi reflected on a century of sporting links between India and New Zealand.
PM Modi noted that the recently signed Sports Joint Action Plan would widen cooperation beyond cricket, paving the way for stronger engagement across different sports.
The initiative is expected to gain further momentum as India prepares to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games.
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon hosted a gala luncheon titled ‘India-New Zealand: A Winning Partnership’ in honour of PM Modi.
The event brought together distinguished guests from government, business, technology, academia, sports, industry, and the cultural sector, highlighting the diverse nature of ties between the two nations.
Speaking at the event, PM Modi emphasised the complementary strengths of India and New Zealand while acknowledging the deep-rooted people-to-people relationship shared by both countries. He welcomed the decision to elevate bilateral ties to the level of a Strategic Partnership, saying it would accelerate cooperation in several key areas.
The Prime Minister also stated that the India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA), concluded in record time, would generate new opportunities for businesses, farmers and young people, while helping both countries achieve their objective of doubling bilateral trade by 2030.
Prime Minister Luxon highlighted the enduring friendship between the two countries and expressed confidence in expanding cooperation for mutual economic growth and prosperity.
