INS Mahendragiri Joins Indian Navy; Rajnath Singh Highlights Maritime Strength

The Indian Navy officially welcomed INS Mahendragiri into its fleet during a commissioning ceremony held in Visakhapatnam on Saturday.

Speaking at the event, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said the indigenous stealth frigate would enhance India’s naval capabilities, reinforce security along the eastern coastline and extend the country’s operational reach across the Indian Ocean Region.

Rajnath Singh described Visakhapatnam as the backbone of India’s Eastern Naval Command and applauded Andhra Pradesh’s rise as an important centre for defence and aerospace production. He said INS Mahendragiri is the sixth warship commissioned under Project 17A, following the induction of INS Nilgiri, INS Udaygiri, INS Himgiri, INS Taragiri and INS Dunagiri.

The Defence Minister said Indian manufacturers have produced more than 75 per cent of the frigate’s components, demonstrating the country’s growing strength in defence manufacturing.

INS Mahendragiri’s Capabilities

INS Mahendragiri displaces around 6,670 tonnes and can achieve speeds of up to 28 knots.

The Indian Navy designed the warship to undertake long-range missions well beyond the country’s coastline.

The vessel carries BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, long-range air defence systems, multifunction radar, indigenous rocket and torpedo launchers, an integrated anti-submarine warfare system, electronic warfare equipment, and a close-in weapon system, making it one of the Navy’s most capable frontline platforms.

Rajnath Singh observed that although emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence are reshaping warfare, conventional military strength remains indispensable.

Emphasising the growing importance of the Indo-Pacific region, the Defence Minister said India remains committed to ensuring regional stability under the Prime Minister’s MAHASAGAR vision.

Referring to Operation Urja Suraksha, Rajnath Singh noted that the Indian Navy had recently safeguarded 18 merchant vessels carrying cargo valued at more than ₹9,000 crore during the West Asia crisis.

Rajnath Singh concluded that INS Mahendragiri will play a vital role in protecting India’s maritime interests, strengthening its strategic presence, and supporting long-term security across the Indian Ocean Region.
