Prime Minister Narendra Modi made history by becoming the first Indian head of government to visit the Mediterranean nation of Cyprus.
He was warmly received by President Nikos Christodoulides at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia, where the two leaders held wide-ranging talks focused on deepening cooperation between the two nations.
PM Modi was accorded a ceremonial guard of honour upon his arrival at the Presidential Palace.
Earlier, he paid floral tributes at the memorial of Archbishop Makarios III, the first President of Cyprus and a highly respected figure in the country’s political and spiritual history.
During their discussions, both leaders explored opportunities to enhance bilateral cooperation in diverse sectors, including trade, investment, innovation, and security.
The talks also covered regional stability and shared geopolitical interests.
PM Modi reiterated India’s appreciation for Cyprus’s consistent support on key international matters, particularly its longstanding position backing India on the Kashmir issue at global forums.
The two leaders agreed to adopt new strategies to bolster trade flows and attract mutual investments.
Discussions focused on fostering innovation, digital partnerships, and cross-sectoral collaborations in science, technology, and fintech.
PM Modi’s visit energises ongoing economic dialogues and boosts business confidence between the two countries.
PM Modi also engaged with the Indian diaspora in Cyprus, acknowledging their contributions in sectors such as education, healthcare, and business.
Although small in number, the Indian community in Cyprus plays a vital role in strengthening cultural and people-to-people ties.
The diaspora welcomed PM Modi with traditional bouquets and warm greetings as he arrived at his hotel in Limassol.
The Prime Minister thanked them for their support and reaffirmed his government’s commitment to deepen ties with Cyprus.
Accompanied by a high-level delegation of around 100 officials, PM Modi’s visit to Cyprus signals a renewed chapter in Indo-Cypriot relations.
It also reflects India’s growing engagement with Europe’s smaller yet strategically significant partners.
The meeting between the two leaders has set the stage for deeper collaboration in the years to come.
Both governments express a shared intent to elevate ties, and PM Modi’s landmark visit delivers tangible outcomes in diplomacy, commerce, and technology, ushering in a promising phase for India-Cyprus relations.
