On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that values, peace, and mutual progress form the foundation of the India-Bhutan relationship, and that the prosperity of both nations remains closely linked.
Addressing a gathering at Changlimethang Ground in Thimphu, PM Modi announced India’s plan to build an immigration checkpoint near Gelephu to further facilitate visitors and investors.
He said that India and Bhutan share interconnected progress and prosperity, and India is using its ₹10,000 crore contribution to Bhutan’s Five-Year Plan to strengthen key sectors such as roads, agriculture, healthcare, and finance.
Highlighting ongoing cooperation across multiple sectors, PM Modi said India continues to ensure the steady supply of essential goods to Bhutan.
He added that the expansion of India’s digital payment ecosystem to Bhutan represents a significant milestone. “The UPI payment facility is expanding here, and soon, Bhutanese citizens will be able to access UPI services in India,” he said.
PM Modi also underscored the enduring spiritual connection between the two nations, describing it as a cornerstone of their relationship.
He announced that India and Bhutan are jointly building a satellite — a landmark achievement reflecting their growing technological collaboration.
The Prime Minister referred to the recently inaugurated Royal Bhutanese Temple in Rajgir, India, and announced plans to establish a Bhutanese temple and guest house in Varanasi, with land already being provided by the Indian government.
“Through these temples, we are deepening our historic and spiritual ties. The blessings of Lord Buddha and Guru Rinpoche continue to guide both our nations,” he said.
Recalling his first foreign visit to Bhutan after taking office in 2014, PM Modi said that India and Bhutan share not only borders but also culture and compassion, and that their relationship has remained strong through challenges while continuing to grow on the path of peace and prosperity.
PM Modi’s address coincided with the Global Peace Prayer Festival, the exposition of the Sacred Relics of Lord Buddha, and the celebration of His Majesty the Fourth King’s 70th birthday.
He remarked that the grand celebrations reflect the enduring warmth and depth of India-Bhutan relations.
The Prime Minister lauded Bhutan’s leadership, noting that His Majesty’s vision for youth empowerment and technological innovation has inspired a new generation.
“The strongest benefit of the India-Bhutan partnership is felt by our youth. His Majesty’s initiatives in national and voluntary service are shaping a brighter, more empowered future,” PM Modi concluded.
PM Modi’s visit reaffirmed India’s commitment to Bhutan’s development and to strengthening their shared vision of peace, progress, and prosperity.
