Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his Colombo visit had a special interaction with Sri Lankan cricketing legends from the 1996 World Cup-winning team.
The meeting, marked by warmth and nostalgia, brought together iconic players like Sanath Jayasuriya, Chaminda Vaas, Aravinda de Silva, Marvan Atapattu, Ravindra Pushpakumara, Upul Chandana, Kumar Dharmasena, and Romesh Kaluwitharana.
In a gesture of sports diplomacy, PM Modi praised the transformative impact of India’s 1983 World Cup win and Sri Lanka’s 1996 triumph on the international cricket scene.
He noted that Sri Lanka’s innovative and aggressive playing style in 1996 was a precursor to the T20 format, which revolutionized the game globally.
Recalling a moment of solidarity, PM Modi referred to India’s decision to tour Sri Lanka in 1996 despite a bomb blast in Colombo.
“It was a strong symbol of sportsmanship and friendship,” the Prime Minister said.
Drawing a parallel, he added that his own visit to Sri Lanka right after the 2019 Easter terror attacks reflected India’s unwavering spirit and support for its neighbours.
During the meeting, the cricketers urged PM Modi to assist in building a world-class cricket stadium in northern Sri Lanka, especially in the Jaffna region.
They emphasized that such a facility would nurture young talent and promote sports in historically underserved areas.
PM Modi appreciated the suggestion and reiterated India’s commitment to regional development through its ‘Neighborhood First’ policy.
The Prime Minister also cited India’s recent humanitarian support to Myanmar during an earthquake as another example of this enduring principle.
The Sri Lankan players expressed deep gratitude to PM Modi and the Indian government for their generous support during Sri Lanka’s recent economic crisis.
They acknowledged India’s timely assistance with credit lines and essential supplies, which helped stabilize their economy during challenging times.
This rare moment of cricket diplomacy underlined how shared sporting histories continue to bring India and Sri Lanka closer.
PM Modi emphasized the unifying power of sports in fostering people-to-people ties and cultural understanding.
As the meeting concluded, both sides shared a sense of optimism not just for cricket but for stronger bilateral ties rooted in shared values, cooperation, and mutual respect.
