Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday highlighted a shared cultural perspective between India and Ethiopia, noting that both nations refer to their land as ‘Mother’ in their national songs.
Speaking at the Joint Session of the Ethiopian Parliament, he drew parallels between India’s national song, Vande Mataram and Ethiopia’s anthem, March Forward, Dear Mother Ethiopia.
“With the call of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayaas’, our collective effort and emotions towards the motherland reflect a shared perspective,” PM Modi said.
He further emphasised that these national symbols inspire citizens to cherish heritage, culture, and natural beauty while protecting their motherland.
The Prime Minister also underscored Ethiopia’s historical significance as a cradle of humanity.
“When the world speaks of ‘Lucy of Dinkinesh’, it is not just about fossils but a beginning that belongs to all of us,” he said.
Quoting India’s ancient philosophy, Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, meaning ‘The world is one family’, he highlighted the shared human origin and collective destiny beyond politics and borders.
PM Modi lauded Ethiopia as one of the oldest civilisations in human history, noting, “Here, history is alive in the mountains, valleys, and in the hearts of the Ethiopian people. Today, Ethiopia stands tall because its roots are deep, blending ancient wisdom with modern civilisation, the true strength of the nation.”
The Prime Minister received a warm reception as he addressed the 18th Parliament, a world he has spoken in before.
“It is wonderful to be here in Ethiopia, the land of lions. I feel very much at home, as my home state, Gujarat, is also home to lions,” he said.
PM Modi expressed gratitude for receiving Ethiopia’s highest civilian honour, the ‘Great Honour Nishan of Ethiopia’, accepting it on behalf of the people of India with humility.
He conveyed greetings of friendship, goodwill, and brotherhood from India’s 1.4 billion citizens, celebrating the deep-rooted ties between the two nations.
