Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said he felt ‘very much at home’ during his visit to Ethiopia. He described it as a ‘moment of great privilege’ to address the country’s Parliament.
Receiving a warm welcome, PM Modi addressed the Joint Session of the Ethiopian Parliament, marking the 18th legislature in the world where he has delivered his speech.
“It is wonderful to be here in Ethiopia, the land of lions. I feel very much at home because my home state, Gujarat in India, is also home to lions,” he said.
The Prime Minister described Ethiopia as one of the oldest civilisations, with history alive in its mountains, valleys, and people.
“Today, Ethiopia stands tall because its roots are deep. To stand in Ethiopia is to stand where the past is honoured, the present is full of purpose, and the future is welcomed with an open heart,” he said amid loud cheers from Parliament members.
PM Modi also highlighted Ethiopia’s blend of ancient wisdom and modern civilisation, calling it the nation’s true strength. He extended greetings of friendship and goodwill on behalf of India’s 1.4 billion people.
During his address, PM Modi expressed gratitude for receiving Ethiopia’s highest civilian award, the Great Honour Nishan of Ethiopia.
“I accept this award with folded hands, with humility on behalf of the people of India,” he remarked.
Drawing parallels between India and Ethiopia, PM Modi emphasised shared cultural values and national pride.
Referring to India’s national song, Vande Mataram and Ethiopia’s national anthem, he said both celebrate the motherland, inspiring citizens to cherish heritage, culture, and natural beauty.
The Prime Minister concluded by invoking the Indian ethos of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayaas’, together with everyone’s growth, trust, and effort—highlighting the shared vision of progress and unity between the two nations.
