Ethiopian Parliament Greets PM Modi With Enthusiastic Ovation During Official Visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a standing ovation and enthusiastic cheers from Ethiopian lawmakers on Wednesday, ahead of his address to the Parliament.

The session marked a historic engagement, as this became the 18th Parliament in the world where PM Modi has spoken.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi laid a wreath at the Adwa Victory Monument in Addis Ababa, commemorating the historic 1896 Battle of Adwa, in which Ethiopian forces triumphed over Italian invaders, securing the nation’s independence and symbolising Pan-African resistance.

Visit to Adwa Museum

Following the wreath-laying ceremony, PM Modi visited the Adwa Museum, where officials briefed him on Ethiopia’s rich history.

The complex, which includes conference halls, an amphitheatre and a library, functions as a cultural hub, tourist destination, and research centre, preserving Ethiopian heritage and chronicling the global struggle against colonialism.

Prime Minister Modi arrived in Ethiopia on Tuesday to a warm and enthusiastic reception, marking an important leg of his official overseas visit.

The visit took place at the invitation of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali and reflects the growing strategic and diplomatic significance of India–Ethiopia relations.

In a personal gesture, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali himself drove PM Modi from the airport to the hotel.

During the drive, he showed the Indian Prime Minister the Science Museum and Friendship Park, an initiative that was not part of the original itinerary.

Members of the Indian community in Ethiopia also extended a warm welcome upon PM Modi’s arrival at the hotel in Addis Ababa.

Honours and Future Cooperation

During the visit, Ethiopia conferred its highest civilian honour, the Great Honour Nishan of Ethiopia, on Prime Minister Modi. He expressed deep gratitude to the government and people of Ethiopia for this recognition.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) also stated that PM Modi invited Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali to attend the AI Impact Summit and the BRICS Summit, both scheduled to be hosted by India in 2026.

These invitations underline India’s commitment to strengthening multilateral cooperation and deepening bilateral ties with Ethiopia.

PM Modi’s reception at the Ethiopian Parliament, combined with the homage paid at the Adwa Victory Monument and the honours conferred upon him, highlights the growing strategic, cultural, and diplomatic importance of India–Ethiopia relations.

The visit reinforces mutual respect, strengthens parliamentary diplomacy, and paves the way for continued collaboration in areas including technology, education, and multilateral initiatives.
