PM Modi Departs Buenos Aires For Brazil; Concludes ‘Productive’ Argentina Visit

PM  Narendra  Modi wrapped up a landmark two‑day visit to Argentina on Saturday and boarded his aircraft for Rio de Janeiro, where he will attend the 17th BRICS Summit—his tour’s fourth stop.

PM Modi expresses gratitude to Argentina

Before take‑off, the Prime Minister thanked President Javier Milei, the Argentine government, and the public for their hospitality.

“My visit to Argentina has been a productive one. I am confident that our discussions will add significant momentum to our bilateral friendship and fulfil the strong potential that exists. I thank President Milei, the Government, and the people of Argentina for their warmth,” he wrote on X.

High‑Level talks advance strategic agenda

During Friday’s talks at Casa Rosada, the two leaders celebrated 75 years of diplomatic ties and five years of strategic partnership. They agreed to:

  • Diversify trade and explore an expanded India‑MERCOSUR Preferential Trade Agreement.
  • Deepen defence cooperation to serve mutual strategic interests.
  • Secure critical resources, with Argentina set to supply lithium and shale gas to bolster India’s energy security.
  • Expand collaboration in nuclear energy, agriculture, digital public infrastructure (UPI), space, railways, pharmaceuticals, and sports.

Both leaders condemned terrorism in all its forms and vowed to amplify the Global South’s voice in multilateral forums.

Tributes and symbolic gestures

  • Key to the City: Buenos Aires honoured PM Modi with its symbolic key, recognising his role in strengthening bilateral ties.
  • Floral tributes: The Prime Minister paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore, and national hero General José de San Martín.
  • Diaspora welcome: Hundreds of Indian expatriates greeted him with chants, dances, and tricolour flags outside his hotel.

Next stop: BRICS Summit in Brazil

Landing in Rio, PM Modi will join leaders of the expanded 10‑nation BRICS group—now including Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.

In a departure statement, he affirmed India’s commitment to using BRICS to build “a more peaceful, equitable, democratic, and balanced multipolar world.”

Following Brazil, the Prime Minister will travel to Namibia for the final leg of his five‑nation tour.
