Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the G20 Leaders’ Summit at Nasrec in Johannesburg, where he was warmly welcomed by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The two-day summit, held on 22–23 November, brings together several global leaders to discuss pressing international challenges, development priorities, and cooperative frameworks.
Upon his arrival in Johannesburg on Friday afternoon local time, PM Modi stated that he looked forward to holding ‘productive discussions’ with fellow leaders on crucial global issues.
He emphasised India’s commitment to enhancing cooperation, advancing development goals, and supporting a future rooted in collective progress.
PM Modi highlighted that the summit provides an important platform to advance India’s vision of global inclusivity, especially under themes such as solidarity, equality, and sustainability, which South Africa has championed during its G20 presidency.
President Cyril Ramaphosa personally greeted PM Modi, marking a significant gesture reflecting the strong ties between India and South Africa.
This year’s summit holds historic significance as it is the first G20 Summit hosted on African soil.
PM Modi noted that the moment carries special meaning, especially after the African Union’s inclusion as a full G20 member during India’s presidency in 2023.
On the sidelines of the summit, PM Modi engaged in several bilateral meetings with world leaders. One of the key discussions took place with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
The two leaders reviewed the rapid expansion of the India–Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and identified areas of emerging collaboration.
PM Modi described the meeting as ‘very good’, noting that the strategic partnership marks five years and continues to deliver transformative results.
Their discussions focused on defence and security, nuclear energy, and trade — three sectors seen as having immense potential for further growth.
They also explored cooperation in education, cultural exchanges, mobility, and technology.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, both leaders expressed satisfaction with the diversification of bilateral ties.
Prime Minister Albanese conveyed Australia’s solidarity with India following a recent terror attack, reaffirming the two countries’ shared commitment to counterterrorism efforts.
This G20 Summit becomes the fourth consecutive one hosted in the Global South, and PM Modi makes his fourth official visit to South Africa after earlier bilateral and BRICS engagements.
PM Modi stated that the summit provides an opportunity to present India’s perspective guided by the ethos of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’.
He affirmed that India will continue to advocate for inclusive global development, sustainability, and strengthened cooperation among nations.
