Trump Backs Mayor-Elect Mamdani After ‘Constructive’ Talks

US President Donald Trump met New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani at the White House today and expressed renewed confidence.

Trump told reporters that the discussion was constructive, and he underscored his desire to support Mamdani’s efforts to strengthen New York. He said that this meeting exceeded expectations and underscored shared priorities centred on public safety and community well-being across town.

Mamdani thanked Trump for the fruitful discussion, noting that the two leaders stressed service for New Yorkers above political differences.

He underscored that the discussion focused on shared purpose, respected differences, and confirmed devotion to working together and enhancing performance.

Trump said he thought that Mamdani could surprise conservative critics and be effective for residents across a diverse district. He added that his administration was out to assist, not hinder Mamdani, and predicted records of accomplishment from the new mayor.

Both leaders discussed immigration enforcement, with Trump emphasising the removal of violent offenders and cooperation on broader safety strategies.

He said that Mamdani shared the desire for safer communities and supported firm action against the dangerous criminal networks. Trump added that their discussion of security matters was extensive, revealing a shared vision in maintaining peace and stability throughout New York.

Earlier in the day, Trump softened previous criticism, suggesting he and Mamdani could work together effectively despite ideological contrasts.

He admitted Mamdani’s victory-speech jab and said his own campaign language had often been too harsh and confrontational.

Trump first recognised Mamdani’s competitive race and credited him for running a disciplined campaign despite intense national scrutiny. The meeting came after months of clashes during the mayoral election, which Mamdani won decisively over independent candidate Andrew Cuomo.
