Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto travelled together to the historic Prambanan Temple in Yogyakarta on Wednesday, highlighting the centuries-old civilisational and cultural ties between India and Indonesia.
The visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site was one of the key engagements of PM Modi’s three-day state visit to Indonesia.
The Prime Minister shared a photograph with President Prabowo on social media while travelling to the temple and later posted an aerial video of the sprawling complex, describing it as the ‘majestic Prambanan Temple’.

During the visit, the two leaders jointly inaugurated an India-supported conservation and restoration project at the temple complex, reaffirming their commitment to preserving shared cultural heritage.
Earlier this week, India and Indonesia exchanged a Letter of Intent for the restoration project following bilateral talks focused on strengthening their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and promoting peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific.
Built in the 10th century, Prambanan is Indonesia’s largest Hindu temple complex and is primarily dedicated to Lord Shiva.
The UNESCO-listed monument also houses temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma, while its intricate stone carvings depict scenes from the Ramayana, reflecting the deep cultural links between India and Southeast Asia.
Addressing the Indonesian Parliament a day earlier, PM Modi said India and Indonesia share not only the sea but also a rich civilisational heritage rooted in the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. He also highlighted landmarks such as Prambanan and Borobudur, Indonesia’s national emblem Garuda and the Bali Jatra festival as enduring symbols of the close cultural bond between the two nations.
During his visit, PM Modi held talks with President Prabowo, addressed the Indonesian Parliament, met the Indian diaspora and signed several agreements to strengthen bilateral cooperation.
