PM Modi, President Prabowo Inaugurate Prambanan Temple Conservation Project; Offer Prayers

Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered prayers at the historic Prambanan Temple in Yogyakarta on Wednesday and jointly inaugurated the restoration and conservation project of the UNESCO World Heritage Site with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.

The visit underscored the shared civilisational heritage and growing strategic partnership between India and Indonesia.

The Prime Minister offered prayers at the 10th-century temple, interacted with temple officials and was warmly welcomed by people lining the route carrying the national flags of India and Indonesia.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi shared an aerial video of the iconic temple complex on social media, describing it as the ‘majestic Prambanan Temple’.

A day earlier, India and Indonesia exchanged a Letter of Intent for an India-supported conservation and restoration project at the temple complex following bilateral talks between the two leaders.

The initiative reflects both countries’ commitment to preserving shared cultural heritage while further strengthening their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Built in the 10th century, Prambanan is Indonesia’s largest Hindu temple complex, dedicated mainly to Lord Shiva.

The UNESCO-listed site also honours Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma, with Ramayana carvings reflecting the shared cultural heritage of India and Southeast Asia.

PM Modi said the two nations remain united by the legacies of the Ramayana and the Mahabharata.

The two leaders also reviewed bilateral cooperation across trade, defence, maritime security, healthcare, space and critical minerals, reaffirming their commitment to a peaceful Indo-Pacific while exchanging agreements to deepen cooperation across key sectors.
