Saulos Chilima
On Tuesday, Malawi Vice President Dr. Saulos Chilima along with nine others were killed in a fatal military jet crash.
The plane had taken off from Lilongwe, Malawi’s capital, and was on its way to Mzuzu International Airport when it vanished from the radar due to bad weather.
Despite air traffic control’s cautionary warnings, the pilot attempted to land, raising worries about the safety of the flight.
Following a massive search, the missing plane was discovered in Chikangawa Forest, with all of its occupants dead.
The president’s secretary, Colleen Samba, confirmed the tragic news in a statement.
Among the victims were Vice President Saulos Chilima, former First Lady Shanil Dzimbiri, three military crew members, and three other passengers.
President Lazarus Chakwera declared a national day of mourning and directed that flags be flown at half-mast until the day of the funeral to honor the deceased’s memory.
The ill-fated plane was bound for a solemn occasion: the funeral of a former government minister.
Significant political events occurred during Vice President Chilima’s term, notably his key role in the 2020 presidential election rerun alongside President Chakwera.
Despite recent legal issues, Chilima’s sudden and untimely death stunned the nation, leaving behind a legacy of service and dedication.
