Emmanuel Macron
On Thursday, President Emmanuel Macron arrived in France’s Pacific island of New Caledonia, vowing to restore calm as quickly as possible following separatist upheaval that has killed six people and injured hundreds.
Macron landed in Noumea to meet with political and business leaders as part of a high-stakes effort to put an end to more than a week of theft, arson, and violent violence in the popular holiday resort.
After exiting the plane at Tontouta International Airport, the French leader stated that his mission was to restore peace, calm, and security as soon as possible.
“That is the absolute priority”, Macron added.
French officials have deployed over 3,000 troops, police, and other security personnel to suppress the unrest, which has left the islands littered with charred automobiles and the remains of burned-out schools, shops, and businesses.
Since May 13, when the protests began, police have detained 269 people, according to officials.
Macron led a minute of silence for the six people killed, two of whom were police officers, and promised that security personnel would remain as long as necessary.
Louis Le Franc, the high commissioner for France, stated that the previous night had been peaceful.
