French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Tuesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky could meet within the next two weeks.
Speaking to French news channel LCI, Macron said Putin had expressed readiness for the talks during a phone call with US President Donald Trump on Monday.
Macron revealed that leaders first planned a bilateral meeting between Putin and Zelensky, followed by a trilateral meeting with Trump, and later a multilateral format involving European leaders.
He stressed that Europe must remain central to the dialogue, reflecting the continent’s ‘collective will’.
Unlike their 2019 meeting in France, Macron suggested the talks could take place in a neutral country such as Switzerland or Turkey, where Russia and Ukraine have previously engaged in bilateral discussions.
After meeting Trump at the White House, Zelensky told reporters he was ready for ‘any format’ of discussions with Putin. He said Ukraine had received Russia’s proposal for a bilateral meeting, followed by a trilateral session.
“I believe unconditionally we should meet and think about the further development of this path to the end of the war,” Zelensky stated, though he admitted he did not yet know all the details of the proposal.
Trump confirmed he had already begun arranging a peace meeting between Zelensky and Putin. He said that after the bilateral meeting, he would join the leaders for a trilateral round of talks.
“At the conclusion of the meetings, I called President Putin and began the arrangements for a meeting, at a location to be determined, between President Putin and President Zelensky,” Trump said.
