An all-party Indian Parliamentary delegation, led by DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, began the final leg of its five-nation diplomatic tour by paying tribute to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation, in Madrid, Spain.
The solemn occasion marked a reflection on Gandhi’s enduring principles of non-violence and peace, a message deeply resonant in today’s global context.
The Indian Embassy in Spain announced the event on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), describing it as a moment to honour Gandhi’s legacy and reaffirm India’s commitment to his values.
Following the tribute, the delegation met with members of the Indian community in Spain.
The group delivered a strong message emphasising India’s unity and unwavering resolve in combating terrorism, which poses a threat to global peace and humanity.
The delegation underscored that its diverse political composition reflected a broad national consensus to fight terrorism decisively.
Members of the delegation encouraged the diaspora to take pride in their heritage, remain united, and actively support India’s pursuit of justice and peace.
Alongside Kanimozhi, the delegation included Samajwadi Party MP Rajeev Rai, BJP MP Captain Brijesh Chowta (Retd), RJD MP Prem Chand Gupta, AAP MP Ashok Kumar Mittal, former Deputy Permanent Representative of India to the UN Ambassador Manjeev Singh Puri, and Ambassador Jawed Ashraf.
During interactions, the Indian community shared that their Spanish acquaintances expressed shock and concern over the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, reflecting growing international awareness of India’s fight against terrorism.
The community voiced strong support for India’s counter-terrorism efforts and solidarity with the nation.
The delegation’s final day in Spain will include meetings with government officials, parliamentarians, and civil society representatives.
These discussions aim to brief Spanish leaders on ‘Operation Sindoor’- India’s recent counter-terror operation and to position India as the world’s fourth-largest economy committed to peace, stability, and a firm stand against terrorism.
The Indian Embassy highlighted the delegation’s interaction with the diaspora, reiterating India’s determination to lead global efforts against terrorism while promoting peace and resilience.
The delegation also met with Arturo Fernandez Alvarez, a Spanish businessman and survivor of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.
Arturo joined the delegation in condemning terrorism, reinforcing a shared commitment to combat this menace.
This visit is part of India’s broader diplomatic outreach to spotlight ‘Operation Sindoor’ and India’s ongoing battle against Pakistan-sponsored cross-border terrorism.
Prior to Spain, the delegation had successful engagements in Latvia, Greece, Slovenia, and Russia, further reinforcing India’s firm stance on terrorism.
The Kanimozhi-led delegation’s visit to Spain highlights India’s unified voice against terrorism and its efforts to engage global partners in promoting peace and security.
The outreach aims to strengthen ties with the diaspora and foreign governments, fostering collaboration against threats to humanity and upholding the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of non-violence.
