Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has invited FlyDubai pilot Captain Smit Machchhar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to light a ceremonial flame at Israel’s next Independence Day event, calling the Indian pilot a hero of India, Israel and the entire world.
During a telephone conversation with Captain Machchhar on Sunday, Netanyahu praised his courage and composure in dealing with the mid-air attack that unfolded inside the cockpit.
The Israeli Prime Minister said the pilot’s actions went beyond saving the lives of those on board.
Netanyahu said Captain Machchhar impressed him with his courage and calm judgement under extremely difficult circumstances. He described the pilot’s actions as remarkable and almost miraculous.
The Israeli Prime Minister said Captain Machchhar had become a symbol of courage against violence and evil, adding that people around the world had rightly recognised his actions.
Netanyahu also wished the pilot a speedy and complete recovery and conveyed his family’s regards to Machchhar’s wife and family.
Calling the proposed ceremony a special honour, Netanyahu said Israel normally reserves the Independence Day flame-lighting ceremony for its citizens.
However, he said he believed Israeli citizens would embrace Captain Machchhar and honour him for his bravery.
Netanyahu invited the pilot to visit Israel again, saying the circumstances surrounding the visit would make it a memorable and historic occasion.
Netanyahu also invited PM Modi to join Captain Machchhar in lighting the flame, highlighting the pilot’s actions and India-Israel ties.
Captain Machchhar has received widespread praise for his courage and presence of mind during the incident.
Netanyahu thanked the pilot and expressed hope to meet him in Israel after his recovery.
