Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah paid tribute to freedom fighter, revolutionary and scholar Shyamji Krishna Varma on his birth anniversary, recalling his contribution to India’s freedom movement.
Shyamji Krishna Varma was born on October 4, 1857, in Mandvi in Gujarat’s Kutch district. He became a prominent figure in the independence movement and worked to advance India’s freedom cause while living abroad.
PM Modi said Varma dedicated his life to breaking the chains of India’s subjugation and protecting the honour of the motherland. He said the nation would never forget Varma’s courage and perseverance.
Varma established India House in London as a centre for revolutionary activities and promoted India’s independence through his publication, The Indian Sociologist.

Amit Shah also paid homage to Varma, highlighting his efforts to inspire Indians living abroad to join the freedom movement. Shah said the establishment of India House on British soil helped nurture a new generation of revolutionaries.
HM Shah also recalled Varma’s work through The Indian Sociologist and the Indian Home Rule Society, through which he strongly criticised British policies and promoted the cause of Indian independence.
Shah said Varma’s struggle and sacrifices would never be forgotten by the nation.

Varma used political organisation and journalism to mobilise support for India’s independence from abroad. His work in London helped connect Indian nationalists and provided a platform for revolutionary activities.
PM Modi and Shah’s tributes further highlighted Varma’s enduring contribution to India’s freedom struggle and his efforts to inspire a generation of nationalists beyond the country’s borders.
