Israel launched airstrikes on Iran early Saturday, targeting sites it described as military facilities, in response to a ballistic missile attack on October 1, officials reported. Israeli authorities labeled the operation as “precise strikes on military targets in Iran” but did not immediately elaborate on specific locations or the extent of damage.
An Israeli military statement emphasized, “The regime in Iran and its proxies in the region have been relentlessly attacking Israel since October 7—on seven fronts—including direct attacks from Iranian soil.”
In Tehran, Iran’s capital, residents reported hearing explosions, with state media initially acknowledging the sounds and attributing some to local air defense systems. Meanwhile, Syrian state media stated that their air defenses engaged “hostile targets” in Syrian airspace, hinting at regional escalations.
Iran previously launched two ballistic missile attacks on Israel, further intensifying tensions amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. On October 7, Hamas initiated the war with an assault on Israel, sparking broader hostilities. Israel also reportedly launched a ground invasion in Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah positions near the border.
The airstrike coincided with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s return from a Middle Eastern diplomatic tour. During his visit, Blinken advised Israel to avoid actions that could escalate tensions, urging them to refrain from targeting nuclear sites in Iran.
White House National Security Council spokesman Sean Savett commented, “We understand that Israel is conducting targeted strikes against military targets in Iran” and referred further inquiries to Israeli authorities.
