Iran Suspends Switzerland Talks After US Warning

Iran has suspended its participation in ongoing four-party negotiations in Switzerland involving the United States, Qatar and Pakistan, citing recent American threats as the reason for its withdrawal.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said a threatening statement from the United States during the talks prompted Tehran to halt its involvement.

Iranian officials informed the other participants that they would not continue negotiations under the current circumstances.

Despite efforts by Qatar and Pakistan to keep the discussions on track, Iran stood by its decision and urged all parties to fulfil their commitments.

Tehran also accused Israel of violating the ceasefire, raising concerns about trust and accountability in the broader diplomatic process.

The development followed a warning from US President Donald Trump, who called on Iran to restrain its allies in Lebanon and warned of strong action if tensions escalated further.

Even after Iran’s withdrawal, US officials maintained that the negotiations had produced positive results.

Vice President JD Vance said negotiators made encouraging progress during the initial round of discussions in Switzerland.

According to US officials, the talks focused on several key issues, including Iran’s nuclear programme, security in the Strait of Hormuz and efforts to preserve the fragile ceasefire in Lebanon.

American diplomats also discussed measures aimed at preventing further escalation and maintaining regional stability.

A senior US diplomat said the delegation remained actively engaged throughout the negotiations and continued to pursue diplomatic solutions to ongoing regional challenges.

Iran’s withdrawal has cast fresh uncertainty over the talks, underscoring the fragile state of US-Iran relations and the challenges facing efforts to maintain stability in the Middle East.
