Rights Group Condemns Suspension Of Lord Ram Statue Project In Bangladesh

A leading international human rights organisation has condemned the suspension of the construction of an 81-foot-tall statue of Lord Ram at the Sri Sri Radha Govinda and Kali Temple in Bangladesh’s Gaibandha district, alleging that the move came under pressure from Islamist extremist groups.

According to Justice Makers Bangladesh in France (JMBF), the project was halted amid fears of possible mob violence, mounting pressure from Islamist groups, and growing concerns over the security of the Hindu minority community.

The organisation said the suspension raises serious concerns about religious freedom, freedom of expression, and the protection of minority rights under both Bangladesh’s Constitution and international human rights commitments.

JMBF stated that after plans for the statue became public in early June, several local Islamist groups organised protests, press conferences, demonstrations, and submitted memoranda to local authorities opposing the initiative.

Under increasing pressure, temple authorities officially announced the suspension of construction on June 12.

The organisation also expressed concern that several mainstream Bangladeshi media outlets had provided only limited coverage of the incident, reportedly due to fears of extremist backlash and risks to journalists’ safety. It warned that such self-censorship could undermine press freedom and the public’s right to information.

JMBF founder-president and human rights lawyer Shahanur Islam said Bangladesh’s constitutional guarantees and international obligations require the protection of religious freedom, freedom of expression, and minority rights. He also voiced concern over the growing influence of Islamist extremist groups and increasing incidents of intimidation and discrimination against religious minorities.

The organisation urged the Bangladeshi government to conduct an independent and impartial investigation into the matter and ensure the security and religious freedom of minority communities.

JMBF further stressed that yielding to threats or pressure from extremist groups weakens democracy, the rule of law, and fundamental human rights protections.
