Iran Faces Challenges Clearing Strait Of Hormuz Mines: Report

Iran is encountering difficulties in restoring normal movement through the Strait of Hormuz after laying sea mines during recent tensions, raising concerns over maritime safety and energy supplies.

According to a report by The New York Times citing US officials, some of the mines deployed in the key shipping route cannot be fully accounted for, complicating efforts to secure the waterway.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a vital global corridor, handling a significant share of the world’s oil transport. Any disruption in this narrow passage has direct implications for international markets, particularly for countries dependent on energy imports.

Officials indicated that the mines were placed using small vessels during last month’s escalation involving the United States and Israel.

The deployment process was reportedly not systematically recorded, making tracking and removal operations more difficult. Some devices are also believed to have drifted from their original positions.

US authorities described the situation as disorganised. They warned that unidentified mines could pose a threat to commercial shipping passing through the region.

The issue has also added complexity to the ongoing diplomatic engagement between Washington and Tehran. Both sides are currently involved in discussions aimed at easing tensions.

In a related development, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps issued a caution to vessels navigating the strait. It advised them to consider alternative routes to reduce the risk of encountering mines.

Although Iran has agreed to reopen the passage following a ceasefire with the United States, the process of clearing the area has slowed the return to normal operations.

Temporary navigation measures are being explored to ensure safer transit until the situation is fully stabilised.
