Confusion and contradiction gripped the global stage Monday night after US President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire between Iran and Israel, a claim that Iranian officials swiftly denied.
With no formal confirmation from either side and rising tensions on the ground, the prospect of peace remains uncertain.
On Monday evening, President Donald Trump took to his platform, Truth Social, to declare that Iran and Israel had agreed to a full ceasefire, marking the end of what he termed the ’12-Day War’.
He stated the ceasefire would begin within six hours, allowing each side to complete current operations.
President Trump outlined a phased process, Iran would initiate a 12-hour ceasefire, followed by Israel, with the truce becoming official and permanent at the 24-hour mark.
He congratulated both countries for showing ‘stamina, courage, and intelligence’, and called the deal a ‘breakthrough’ that could prevent years of destruction in the Middle East.
Despite President Trump’s announcement, a senior Iranian official told the media that Tehran had received no formal ceasefire proposal from the US and saw no reason to halt its military operations.
“At this very moment, the enemy is committing aggression against Iran,” the official said. “Iran is on the verge of intensifying its retaliatory strikes, with no ear to listen to the lies of its enemies.”
He described US and Israeli statements as ‘deception’ intended to justify future attacks.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi further clarified the country’s position, stating that no agreement on a ceasefire had been reached.
He denied media reports suggesting any truce and insisted that Iran had not accepted any terms proposed by Washington or Tel Aviv.
As of Monday night, Israeli officials also remained silent on the matter, offering no confirmation or details about a ceasefire agreement.
Likewise, the White House and Pentagon had not released any formal statements, raising questions about whether the truce President Trump described had gone through any diplomatic or official channels.
The conflicting narratives from Washington and Tehran have cast serious doubt on the implementation and durability of any ceasefire agreement.
Without confirmation or clear terms from involved governments, it remains unclear whether any truce will take effect or hold.
In his closing remarks, President Trump delivered a sweeping message of peace and unity, writing, “God bless Israel, God bless Iran, God bless the Middle East, God bless the United States of America, and GOD BLESS THE WORLD!”
While the US President projected optimism, events on the ground and statements from Tehran signal that the region may remain volatile, and that the war, despite proclamations, may not be over just yet.
