IndiGo London-Delhi Flight Returns To Heathrow After Technical Issue

An IndiGo Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner was operating from London Heathrow to Delhi when the crew encountered a technical issue shortly after departure. The aircraft returned to the UK airport early Wednesday.

Flight 6E4 remained airborne for roughly an hour before the pilots turned the aircraft around and headed back to Heathrow.

The crew followed standard emergency procedures and secured priority handling for the return journey.

The aircraft landed safely at Heathrow, allowing passengers to leave the plane without any reported injuries.

IndiGo confirmed that its pilots identified the issue shortly after the aircraft departed London on September 22.

The airline said the crew chose to return to Heathrow in accordance with established operating procedures.

“A technical issue was detected shortly after take-off on IndiGo flight 6E 04 operating from London to New Delhi on 22 September 2026. Following standard operating procedures, the pilots decided to turn back and landed the aircraft safely at London Heathrow Airport,” IndiGo stated.

Some reports mentioned possible smoke onboard, but the airline has not publicly confirmed the precise nature of the technical problem.

The airline has now placed the Boeing 787-9 under maintenance inspection.

IndiGo said the aircraft would return to service only after completing the required checks and receiving the necessary clearances.

Flight-tracking data indicated that the aircraft departed Heathrow at approximately 12:40 AM IST and reached the airport again at around 2 AM.

IndiGo said it took steps to limit disruption for affected passengers. These included arranging hotel stays and moving travellers to the next available flights.

The airline reiterated, “The safety of our customers, crew, and aircraft remains our top priority.”

The affected aircraft will resume operations once maintenance teams complete their assessment and all required approvals are in place.

The incident has temporarily disrupted the London-Delhi service while IndiGo works to assist passengers and complete the aircraft’s technical inspection.
