Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Sunday that law enforcement personnel had faced violence from individuals and organised groups exploiting demonstrations to provoke confrontations and create disorder.
She expressed solidarity with officers tasked with protecting citizens, workers, traders and others who wished to go about their daily lives without fear.
Meloni thanked security personnel for their efforts, saying they were safeguarding public safety amid violent incidents.
On Saturday, Meloni acknowledged the right to peaceful demonstrations, including a mobilisation organised by the CGIL trade union that attracted left-wing leaders.
She said thousands had participated peacefully, stressing that public participation remained essential to a healthy democracy.
However, stones struck police officers in Milan, injuring several of them.
In Turin, authorities stopped people carrying cobblestones and hammers used to break windows. In Bologna, disturbances prompted the precautionary closure of the railway station.
“Demonstrating is a right. Setting our cities ablaze is not,” Meloni said.
Meloni urged opposition parties to condemn the violence unequivocally and call for peaceful demonstrations.
She called for unanimous condemnation of such acts and warned that people could interpret ambiguity or silence as justification for disorder.
