India Reaffirms Commitment To ‘Pact For The Future’ At UN Dialogue

India reiterated its strong commitment to the Pact for the Future and its annexes, the Global Digital Compact (GDC) and the Declaration on Future Generations, during the third interactive informal dialogue at the UN.

India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Parvathaneni Harish, called the initiative a crucial step in strengthening collective global action to address emerging and long-term challenges.

He emphasised the need for inclusive and forward-looking international cooperation.

India Urges Results-Oriented 2028 Review

Speaking at Thursday’s informal dialogue, Harish said the 2028 review must be results-driven and forward-looking. He called for special focus on critical reform areas, particularly UN Security Council expansion and reforms in the global financial architecture, where progress has remained stagnant.

“We must ensure dedicated attention to critical reform areas where progress has been insufficient,” Harish said.

India underlined that most countries support reforming the Security Council to reflect current geopolitical realities.

Harish criticised the lack of progress during the 79th session of the Intergovernmental Negotiations (IGN), urging member states to begin text-based negotiations without delay.

“We must resist efforts to maintain the status quo,” he asserted.

India Calls for Strategic Alignment and Coherence

Harish stated that India strongly supports strategic alignment to avoid duplication and emphasised linking the 2028 review with the outcomes of the 2027 SDG Summit.

He urged member states to integrate sectoral reviews and ongoing international processes, such as WSIS+20, the World Social Summit, and the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development, into the Pact’s review framework.

He emphasised that member states must now align the UN@80 goals with the Pact’s review and implementation efforts, despite their exclusion from the original agreement.

India stressed the importance of leveraging platforms like the High-Level Political Forum and ECOSOC for progress tracking.

India welcomed the establishment of an Independent International Scientific Panel on AI and a Global Dialogue on AI Governance under the GDC framework. Harish expressed hope for a consensus-based conclusion to the ongoing negotiations on modalities.

“India remains committed to working with all stakeholders to ensure the effective implementation of the Pact and its annexes,” Harish concluded.
