India Maintains Diplomatic Balance Amid Israel–Iran Conflict Through Continued Engagement

India has underlined its policy of maintaining engagement with competing powers in West Asia by providing a platform for both Israeli and Iranian representatives at the Raisina Dialogue in New Delhi.

The development came at a time when tensions between the two countries remain high, reflecting New Delhi’s careful diplomatic balancing.

In an article for The Times of Israel, Italian political adviser and geopolitical analyst Sergio Restelli stated, “The Raisina Dialogue has increasingly become more than a conference. It functions as a stage where India signals the principles guiding its foreign policy. This year’s sequence of events — the virtual participation of Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar followed by the appearance in Delhi of Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh — offered an unusually clear illustration of how New Delhi manages competing relationships in a polarised geopolitical environment.”

Restelli added, “The order of appearances was itself revealing. Israel’s foreign minister addressed the conference virtually first, outlining Israel’s security concerns and defending the military campaign launched against Iran. Soon after, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister appeared in Delhi and used the same platform to sharply criticise the war and warn that Tehran viewed the confrontation as existential.”

Opposing Narratives Presented at the Same Forum

According to the report, the sequence of appearances at the dialogue also carried symbolic importance. Israel’s foreign minister addressed the conference first through a virtual message, presenting Israel’s security concerns and defending its military operations against Iran.

Shortly afterwards, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister arrived in Delhi and used the same platform to strongly criticise the conflict while warning that Tehran views the confrontation as a serious existential threat.

The discussions took place at a time when the broader West Asia region is witnessing heightened instability.

The report highlighted that India’s approach reflects its long-standing doctrine of strategic autonomy. Over the years, New Delhi has expanded cooperation with Israel in areas such as defence technology, intelligence sharing and innovation.

At the same time, India has maintained longstanding ties with Iran due to shared geographical interests, energy cooperation and major connectivity initiatives, including the Chabahar Port project.

Both relationships are considered crucial for advancing India’s strategic and economic priorities.

Analysts believe that the Israel–Iran conflict could disrupt the connectivity networks India is attempting to develop across the Indo-Mediterranean region.

Instead of positioning itself as a mediator or adopting traditional neutrality, India appears to be strengthening its diplomatic influence by maintaining engagement with all parties involved in the crisis.
