India, Austria Discuss Expanding Cooperation In Trade, Defence, Innovation

India’s Ambassador to Austria, Shambhu S Kumaran, met members of the India Friendship Group in the Austrian Parliament on Friday to review the growing momentum in bilateral relations and identify fresh opportunities for deeper collaboration across multiple strategic sectors.

The meeting included National Council member Elisabeth Gotze of The Greens. She chairs the India Friendship Group, while Harald Servus and Andreas Minnich from the OVP also attended.

Axel Kassegger and Gerhard Kaniak from the FPO, as well as Yannick Shetty from NEOS, also attended.

According to the Embassy of India in Vienna, both sides discussed trade, sustainability, innovation, mobility and supply chain resilience.

They also explored cooperation in security, defence, space and emerging technologies.

In a post on X, the Embassy stated, “Ambassador @shambhukumaran met members of the India Friendship Group in Austrian Parliament. Members of the Group from the National Council of Austria, Ms. Elisabeth Götze (The Greens-Chair), Mr. Harald Servus (ÖVP), Mr. Andreas Minnich (ÖVP), Dr. Axel Kassegger (FPÖ), Mr. Gerhard Kaniak (FPÖ) and Mr. Yannick Shetty (NEOS) attended.”

“Wide ranging discussions on the growing momentum in India-Austria relations and opportunities to further deepen bilateral cooperation in trade, sustainability, innovation, mobility, supply chain resilience as well as new areas including security & defence, Space and emerging technologies,” the post read.

Austrian Federal Chancellor Christian Stocker paid an official visit to India in April. He became the first Austrian Chancellor to visit India in more than four decades.

During his discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Stocker described India as an influential global voice. He emphasised that lasting peace can only be achieved through dialogue and negotiations.

Stocker called the visit a milestone in bilateral relations. He said both countries had strengthened their 75-year diplomatic partnership and would continue building on the renewed momentum. He also reaffirmed support for a rules-based international order rather than one governed by the principle that might makes right.
