Viktor Orban
On Monday, Hungary’s nationalist government launches its presidency of the European Union, aiming to make Europe great again amid EU lawmakers’ concerns over its role due to Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s clashes with Brussels over democratic norms.
Hungarian diplomats predict Budapest will act as an honest broker in EU policy-making, but analysts predict limited actions due to Brussels’ transition phase after the June elections.
The presidency’s role is to set the agendas, chair meetings, seek consensus, and broker legislation agreements with the European Parliament.
Hungary’s priorities include promoting Western Balkan membership of the EU, illegal migration, and economic competitiveness.
Critics argue that Hungary’s push does not include Ukraine, as it has blocked or delayed funds and arms for Ukraine, maintaining ties with Moscow. It has criticized EU efforts to reduce dependence on China.
Hungary’s recent sanctions against Russia and membership talks with Ukraine suggest a potential push for a nationalist stance.
