US President Donald Trump praised the agreement reached with Iran, calling it a major diplomatic success that fulfilled key American objectives.
Addressing reporters at the conclusion of the G7 summit in Evian, Trump described the agreement as a significant diplomatic achievement. He said the accord would help end the current conflict, reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
“On Sunday, we reached an agreement with Iran that achieves everything we set out to accomplish — everything and much more,” President Trump said.
President Trump said the Iran agreement was a central topic of discussion during his meetings with world leaders attending the summit. He noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had welcomed the breakthrough.
The US President added that PM Modi viewed the agreement as a positive step for regional stability.
“Prime Minister Modi was here, we had a long talk, he’s a great guy,” President Trump said. “They are happy that we made a deal, every one of them.”
According to President Trump, none of the leaders he met encouraged the United States to continue military operations against Iran.
“There’s not one nation that came to us and said, please, sir, keep dropping bombs on them,” he said.
President Trump stressed that reopening the Strait of Hormuz was among the agreement’s most important achievements. He said commercial shipping activity had already begun increasing through the strategic waterway.
“Maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has already increased very substantially,” President Trump said.
President Trump emphasised that Iran had agreed not to develop or obtain nuclear weapons under the understanding.
The US President also acknowledged the role played by regional partners in advancing diplomacy.
“I want to thank our partners in both Pakistan and Qatar. These people work so hard,” Trump said.
