G7 Summit: PM Modi Says AI Must Empower People, Not Just Machines

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday shared India’s perspective on artificial intelligence during the G7 Summit session on ‘Ensuring a Safe, Rapid and Efficient Rollout of AI’ in Evian. He described AI as one of the most influential technologies developed by humanity and highlighted its growing impact across nearly every sphere of modern life.

The Prime Minister said artificial intelligence is transforming fields ranging from scientific innovation and public administration to healthcare, education, and manufacturing.

“The true measure of AI lies not in the power of machines but in how much it empowers ordinary human beings,” PM Modi stated.

PM Modi recalled that India’s AI Impact Summit, organised earlier this year, concentrated on advancing human-centric artificial intelligence. He explained that India’s AI strategy is guided by the MANAV Vision, representing Moral and Ethical Systems, Accountable Governance, National Sovereignty, Accessible and Inclusive, and Valid and Legitimate principles.

The Prime Minister referred to the recent message of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV on artificial intelligence. He noted the message’s emphasis on human values, inclusivity and meaningful human oversight.

PM Modi observed that both India’s MANAV Vision and the Pope’s message convey a common principle. He said technological progress should always remain centred on people.

“No matter how advanced technology becomes, the human being must remain at its centre,” PM Modi noted.

PM Modi highlighted the importance of ensuring children’s safety as AI technologies become more widespread. He noted that AI can support education through local-language learning, creativity, and personalised teaching experiences.

At the same time, the Prime Minister cautioned that inadequate safeguards could expose children to misinformation, deepfakes, and exploitation.

The Prime Minister urged stakeholders to ensure that digital platforms become spaces for learning rather than manipulation.

To balance innovation with responsibility, PM Modi proposed four major measures.

PM Modi proposed promoting safe-by-design AI systems. He also called for the development of common standards and testing frameworks.

The Prime Minister advocated stronger international cooperation against deepfakes and cyber fraud. He further urged countries to extend the benefits of AI across the Global South.
