From Assam’s Golden Silk To Manipur’s Shirui Lily: PM Modi’s Gifts To PM Meloni

Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented specially curated Indian textile gifts to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni during his visit to Italy, highlighting India’s rich weaving traditions, craftsmanship and cultural heritage.

Prime Minister Modi gifted Giorgia Meloni a traditional Muga silk stole and a Shirui Lily silk stole, both symbolising India’s diverse cultural identity and handcrafted excellence.

Muga silk, popularly known as Assam’s ‘Golden Silk’, is among India’s rarest natural textiles and originates from the Brahmaputra Valley in Northeast India.

Known for its natural golden sheen and exceptional durability, the silk is produced without artificial dyes and represents sustainability and traditional weaving craftsmanship.

Artisans admire Muga silk for its strength, longevity and elegant texture, while its natural lustre deepens beautifully over time.

Officials noted that Assam’s silk tradition also complements Italy’s global reputation for luxury textiles and refined design.

The Shirui Lily silk stole drew inspiration from the rare Shirui Lily flower found exclusively in Manipur’s Shirui Kashong Peak.

The flower symbolises purity, cultural identity and pride for the Tangkhul Naga community of Manipur.

Officials said the gift also reflected a cultural connection between India and Italy, where lilies have historically symbolised purity, grace and artistic refinement in Italian culture and Renaissance art.

The specially curated gifts highlighted India’s artistic richness and cultural diplomacy during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Italy, where India and Italy upgraded bilateral relations to a Special Strategic Partnership focused on trade, defence, connectivity and strategic cooperation.
