Acknowledging the absence of India as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), Tesla CEO Elon Musk called the structure “absurd”. On Sunday, the billionaire tech magnate said that the UN bodies need a revision as the UNSC does not adequately represent the world’s most populous country.
While sharing his views on the microblogging platform, X, which he owns, Musk articulated, “At some point, there needs to be a revision of the UN bodies. Problem is that those with excess power don’t want to give it up. India not having a permanent seat on the Security Council, despite being the most populous country on Earth, is absurd”. Besides, he also expressed his take on Africa to collectively have a permanent membership in the top UN body.
This came as a response to a post shared by venture capitalist and author who replied to UN chief Antonio Guterres’s call for a revision of the UN bodies.
Have a look:
India has been trying to get a permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for a long time. However, China has been blocking India’s efforts by using its veto power. Despite this, countries like the United States and France support India’s bid for a permanent seat.
Currently, the UNSC has five permanent members known as the P5, which includes the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, and China. These nations hold significant power, including the ability to veto resolutions. On the other hand, non-permanent members, who serve two-year terms, contribute to the council’s discussions but don’t have the veto power like the permanent members.
