EAM Jaishankar Begins Five-Day Africa Visit To Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar began a five-day official visit to Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire and Ethiopia on Tuesday to deepen India’s bilateral partnerships with the three African nations.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Jaishankar will hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts and meet the leadership of all three countries during his October 6-10 visit.

The discussions will cover trade, economic ties, development cooperation, capacity building and people-to-people relations. The two sides will exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual interest.

In Addis Ababa, Jaishankar will chair the Regional Heads of Mission Conference.

The MEA said the visit reflects India’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with Africa and advancing solidarity with the Global South.

During his transit through Addis Ababa, Jaishankar met Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey. “It was so nice to see the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, during our transit in Addis Ababa,” he posted on X.

The EAM had earlier met former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd in New Delhi and discussed global developments and the evolving Indo-Pacific situation.

Jaishankar will visit Ghana from October 6-7 at the invitation of Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. Ghana said the visit will focus on pharmaceutical development, agricultural mechanisation, value addition, industrialisation, job creation, scholarships and IT partnerships.

The discussions will take place within the framework of President John Dramani Mahama’s Accra Reset philosophy.
