EAM Jaishankar Asserts India’s Policy Independence Amid US Statements On Russian Crude

India has once again highlighted its commitment to an independent foreign policy. This follows fresh comments from the United States regarding its oil trade with Russia.

Addressing delegates at the Munich Security Conference, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar clarified India’s position. He stated that New Delhi’s decisions are guided by national priorities rather than external pressure.

His remarks followed the latest round of US sanctions targeting Moscow’s energy sector, along with statements from American leaders indicating that India had agreed to limit further purchases of Russian crude.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated, “The United States has imposed additional sanctions on Russia’s oil. In our conversations with India, we’ve gotten their commitment to stop buying additional Russian oil. Europe has taken its set of steps moving forward.”

In response, Jaishankar dismissed any suggestion that bilateral trade discussions would compromise India’s long-standing principle of strategic autonomy. He underlined that independent decision-making forms a central pillar of India’s diplomatic evolution and enjoys broad political consensus.

Energy Policy Driven by Market Realities

Commenting on the global energy environment, Jaishankar described, “We are very much wedded to strategic autonomy because it is very much a part of our history and our evolution. And it is something which is very deep, it is something which cuts across the political spectrum as well.”

When pressed on whether India would end Russian oil purchases under any trade framework, the Minister said, “If the bottom line of your question is would I remain independent-minded and make my decisions and would I make choices which may not agree with your thinking; yes, it can happen.”

The Indian government has neither formally endorsed nor rejected Washington’s claim that it pledged to curb additional Russian oil imports. Officials have maintained that energy decisions are determined by economic logic and national interest.

Jaishankar’s intervention at Munich reinforced India’s resolve to safeguard its policy independence while managing complex global strategic and economic dynamics.
