China Orders Apple to Remove WhatsApp and Threads from App Store, Dealing Blow to Mark Zuckerberg

In a significant development impacting Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg, China has instructed Apple to remove its widely-used social media applications, WhatsApp and Threads, from the App Store. Apple has reportedly complied with the Chinese government’s directive, which is seen as an effort to further tighten its internet regulations.

In response, Apple emphasized its commitment to obeying the laws of the countries where it operates, irrespective of any disagreements. Notably, China represents a crucial market for iPhones.

However, the Chinese order extended beyond Meta, as Apple also removed messaging services Signal and Telegram from its App Store. The Cyberspace Administration of China cited national security concerns as the reason behind this move.

Last year, China mandated all mobile app developers to register with the government or cease operations by the end of March, aiming to combat online scams and fraud. These regulatory actions have fostered the growth of domestic social media apps, such as Tencent Holdings’s WeChat.

Rich Bishop, co-founder and CEO of AppInChina, noted that less sensitive apps with significant Chinese business ties, like Duolingo, are expected to comply with the latest regulatory requirements to continue operating. This trend suggests that Chinese consumers will have limited access to international apps, primarily relying on domestic alternatives.

Meanwhile, in the United States, the government has intensified its scrutiny of TikTok, a popular Chinese-owned video-sharing app operated by ByteDance Ltd. Citing national security concerns, the US government is exploring options to ban TikTok unless it is sold to a non-Chinese entity.
