China is strengthening its domestic intellectual property rights framework while facing criticism over alleged violations involving Chinese companies abroad, according to a new report.
The report, published by Uganda’s Nile Post, said Beijing increasingly treats intellectual property as a strategic national resource.
Critics argue that this approach places domestic priorities above international frameworks, including the World Trade Organization’s TRIPS agreement and conventions administered by the World Intellectual Property Organisation.
The report cited the 2026 Frankfurt Auto Parts Show, where German customs reportedly seized 1,274 suspected infringing items, mostly from Chinese exhibitors. Authorities sealed booths and imposed fines, it said.
It claimed that Chinese companies continue to face accusations of counterfeiting and patent violations in foreign markets despite Beijing’s efforts to strengthen overseas IP protection.
The report said this “domestic-first” approach could create a parallel IP ecosystem. It argued that such practices may complicate market competition and weaken confidence among international buyers.
It further pointed to growing European and US trade requirements covering intellectual property, carbon emissions, labour rights and environmental standards.
The report cited allegations involving Chinese EV maker BYD, including claims by purported employees that some stainless-steel components were replaced with carbon steel and quality checks were reduced. Recent reporting said these allegations remain unverified.
It cited another case involving automotive lighting company Shing Yu, where newly recruited graduates allegedly faced reduced salaries.
The report warned that unresolved disputes could weaken China’s standing in global supply chains. It said some buyers were shifting orders towards Southeast Asia, neighbouring countries and Taiwan.
Unless Beijing aligns its IP regime more closely with international norms, the report argued, stronger domestic control could come at the cost of global trust.
