In the midst of a brewing diplomatic dispute between Canada and India following the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada, the Canadian government has firmly rejected India’s travel advisory regarding security risks in Canada. Canada’s response emphasizes its status as one of the safest countries globally and calls for a calm approach to the escalating tensions.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s recent allegations of “potential” involvement of Indian government agents in Nijjar’s killing ignited a diplomatic row. India swiftly rejected these charges as “absurd” and “motivated,” leading to the expulsion of a senior Canadian diplomat by India, mirroring Ottawa’s earlier expulsion of an Indian official.
India, in response to the diplomatic clash, issued an advisory on Wednesday urging all Indian citizens residing in Canada and those considering travel to exercise “utmost caution.” This advisory cited growing anti-India activities and “politically-condoned” hate crimes in Canada. The advisory particularly highlighted “threats” targeting Indian diplomats and segments of the Indian community opposed to the “anti-India agenda.” Indian nationals were advised to avoid regions and venues in Canada where such incidents have occurred.
Despite this advisory, Canada’s Immigration Minister Marc Miller sought to reassure Indian nationals that traveling to Canada remains safe. He acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations but emphasized Canada’s status as one of the safest countries governed by the rule of law. Miller encouraged everyone to remain calm amid the heightened tensions.
Regarding the allegations of Indian government involvement in the Khalistani terrorist’s killing, Miller noted that discussions with India must continue, acknowledging the gravity of the situation and the emotions it has stirred.
Minister of Housing, Infrastructure, and Communities Sean Fraser refrained from commenting on the specifics of the probe into Nijjar’s death to avoid compromising any ongoing investigations. He emphasized the importance of faith in the security services’ ability to conduct a thorough investigation.
Fraser highlighted Canada’s history as a nation built on migration and stressed the importance of unity among Canadians regardless of their backgrounds. He expressed a commitment to promoting peaceful dialogue, even in the face of challenging conversations.
While no specific threats tied to foreign officials were reported, Canadian authorities are focused on safeguarding the safety and well-being of all Canadians, whether they have deep roots in the country or are recent arrivals.
In response to India’s allegations, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) dismissed Trudeau’s claims, asserting that such unsubstantiated allegations divert attention from the presence of Khalistani terrorists and extremists sheltered in Canada, who continue to pose threats to India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
