On Tuesday, King Charles III makes his first official public appearance since being diagnosed with cancer, with physicians saying they are very encouraged by the progress of his treatment.
The British monarch and his wife, Queen Camilla, were scheduled to visit a cancer treatment facility and meet with doctors and patients.
Charles, 75, halted public appearances in February after cancer was discovered when he was being treated for an enlarged prostate the previous month.
The particular nature of his cancer has not been revealed.
His daughter-in-law Catherine, Princess of Wales, 42, had abdominal surgery in January and announced in March that she was undergoing chemotherapy.
Again, no information was provided concerning the type of cancer she has. Kate, as she is popularly known, is married to Prince William, Charles’s eldest son and heir.
Tuesday’s event, the first of several scheduled engagements in the coming weeks, aims to raise awareness about the need for early cancer detection and highlight innovative research.
The king is a patron of Cancer Research UK and Macmillan Cancer Support, while the queen is president of Maggie’s, another cancer-support charity.
King Charles III, who succeeded his mother Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022, was anointed king on May 6 of last year.
Since his diagnosis, he has been spotted attending church services and addressing select audiences. He has also continued to conduct official state business.
On Friday, Buckingham Palace stated that doctors were very encouraged by the progress of his therapy and positive about his continued recovery.
“His treatment as an out-patient will continue but his schedule in the coming weeks will be reduced and subject to medical advice”, a spokesperson said.
One future engagement is a state visit by Japanese Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako in June.
