Brazil on Tuesday conferred its highest civilian honour, the Grand Collar of the National Order of the Southern Cross, on Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his ongoing State Visit.
The award ceremony took place in Brasilia following PM Modi’s arrival from the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro.
This marks PM Modi’s 26th international honour and the third on his current five-nation tour that began on July 2.
The Brazilian government presented the honour in recognition of PM Modi’s global leadership and contribution to strengthening bilateral ties.
On Friday, Trinidad and Tobago conferred its highest civilian honour, the Order of the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago, on PM Modi during his visit to Port of Spain.
Prime Minister Kamala Persad Bissessar praised PM Modi’s leadership, his connection with the Indian diaspora, and his humanitarian efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Earlier, on Wednesday in Accra, Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama conferred upon PM Modi the Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana. The award recognised PM Modi’s influential global leadership and strong statesmanship.
Analysts see these honours as a testament to PM Modi’s unmatched global stature.
A former diplomat noted, “India’s foreign policy is now unapologetically ‘India First’—confident, clear, and consistent. The world is not just watching, it is responding.”
In June, Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides conferred the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III on PM Modi in Nicosia.
Earlier this year, Sri Lanka honoured PM Modi with the Sri Lanka Mitra Vibhushana, while Mauritius awarded him the Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean (GCSK) in March.
On Tuesday in Brasilia, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva welcomed PM Modi with full ceremonial honours, including a 114-horse escort and military salute. Both leaders held a restricted-format meeting followed by delegation-level talks.
The visit will include a signing ceremony, press statements, and a State Lunch at the Alvorada Palace. The honours and engagements mark a major moment in India’s deepening global influence.
