38 Confirmed Dead, 24 Remain Missing In China Highway Bridge Collapse

Local authorities confirmed on Friday that thirty-eight people have died and 24 remain missing following a highway bridge collapse in northwest China’s Shaanxi Province. The disaster, triggered by a flash flood, occurred two weeks ago.

At 6 p.m. on Friday, officials reported that the collapse caused 25 vehicles to plunge into the Jinqian River on July 19. The incident took place in Zhashui County, Shangluo City, when a 40-meter-long section of the highway bridge gave way. Rescuers managed to save one person from the river, according to the city government.

The 366-meter bridge, which spans the Jinqian River, forms part of the Danfeng-Ningshan expressway, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

Rescue Underway

Rescue teams, comprising over 3,400 professionals from various ministries, the armed forces, fire brigades, and non-government rescue organizations, have been conducting extensive search operations. These efforts have covered a 100-kilometer stretch downstream from the collapse site. The rescuers have faced severe challenges, including rushing river waters, adverse weather conditions, and difficult geographical terrain.

Rescue teams have utilized boats, drones, detectors, and underwater robots in their search for survivors and bodies. Despite these efforts, the difficult conditions have complicated the operations.

Authorities continue to coordinate the rescue efforts, deploying all available resources to locate the missing individuals. The search operations, which have been ongoing around the clock, underscore the urgency and commitment of the rescuers.

As rescue operations proceed, the local government has promised a thorough investigation into the bridge collapse. Officials aim to identify the causes and implement measures to prevent future incidents. Meanwhile, they continue to focus on rescue efforts, providing support to affected families, and addressing the community’s immediate needs.

The Shaanxi bridge collapse highlights the devastating impact of natural disasters on infrastructure and human life. The ongoing rescue operations demonstrate the resilience and dedication of the rescuers despite overwhelming challenges.
