Employee Resigns After Boss Attempts to Cancel Annual Leave; Viral Text Exchange Sparks Outrage

An Australian man has made headlines after resigning from his job following what he described as an “appalling” text message from his boss attempting to cancel his pre-planned annual leave at the last minute. The incident came to light when Michael Sanz, known for sharing stories about workplace experiences, shared the exchange between the employee, Noel, and his boss, Nick, on TikTok.

In the conversation, Noel’s boss informed him that due to another staff member resigning, his scheduled leave for the following week had to be revoked, citing an urgent need for all hands on deck. Despite Noel’s explanation that he couldn’t cancel his leave as he had already made arrangements for his brother’s wedding in Bali, the boss suggested reducing his time off from three weeks to three days, questioning the necessity of such a long trip.

Noel expressed his regret at the situation but reiterated the importance of his family trip and his right to use his annual leave as planned. He even proposed solutions such as hiring a temporary worker to cover his absence and offering to assist with additional workload before his departure.

However, the boss remained firm in his decision to cancel Noel’s leave, prompting Noel to announce his immediate commencement of his leave and his contemplation of whether he wanted to continue working for a company that disregarded employee boundaries. He also indicated his intention to escalate the matter to HR.

Michael Sanz, commenting on the situation, criticized the boss’s handling of the matter, emphasizing that employees’ planned leave should be respected and that business operations should be managed by the owners, not the employees. Sanz praised Noel for his response to the situation.

The incident has garnered widespread attention on social media, with many expressing support for Noel’s stance and condemning the boss’s actions as unacceptable.
