Elon Musk’s X Wants To Store Biometric Data Of Users, Know Why

Formerly Known as Twitter Elon Musk’s X has revised its privacy policies aiming to collect biometric data and other personal data such as the educational history and other preferences of the user.
X informed that the data collected would be based on the user’s consent, and the data collected would be used for safety security, and identification purposes.

What is biometric data?

A person’s identity is ascertained using biometric identification. The objective is to obtain some biometric information from this person. It may be a picture of their face, a voice recording, or a copy of their fingerprint.

The reason behind X’s initiative to store biometric data

For adding an extra layer of verification and providing protection to the premium users. This would help X fight impersonation frauds making the platform more secure.
The risk of identity theft always lingers when using any social media platform this will help fight the uncertainties of data theft and identity theft.

The social media platform also informed in the revised privacy policy it intends to collect and use other personal information of users like employment history and other job search activity.
In the updated privacy policy, X noted, “We may collect and use your personal information (such as your employment history, educational history, employment preferences, skills and abilities, job search activity and engagement, and so on) to recommend potential jobs for you, to share with potential employers when you apply for a job, to enable employers to find potential candidates, and to show you more relevant advertising.”

A suit filed against X

Earlier this year X was involved in a class action suit for wrongfully storing and using the data of an Illinois resident without their consent.
According to the suit that was filed on July 11 ” X did not adequately inform individuals who have interacted (knowingly or not) with Twitter, that it collects and/or stores their biometric identifiers in every photograph containing a face that is uploaded to Twitter”
