Dhanteras 2023: Guide to everything you need to know about the auspicious festival

This year, November 10th will be the date of Dhanteras, the celebration that ushers in Diwali. The day is considered auspicious for buying expensive stuff, such as electronics, cookware, and jewellery made of silver and gold to honour Lord Kubera and Goddess Lakshmi, who are both associated with prosperity and fortune in Hindu mythology. ‘Teras’ signifies the thirteenth day of Krishna Paksha, while ‘Dhan’ signifies riches. The celebration, also known as Dhantrayodashi or Dhanvantari Trayodashi, ushers in the five-day Diwali holiday. In the Hindu calendar month of Ashvin or Kartika, it is observed on the thirteenth lunar day of Krishna Paksha.

Dhanteras Schedule

The Dhanteras puja muhurat is set to run for nearly two hours this year, from 5:47 pm to 7:43 pm. Offerings to the gods can include flowers, garlands, and prasad such as lapsi or atta halwa, coriander seeds mixed with jaggery, or boondi laddoo. During the puja, Lord Kubera, Ganesha, Dhanvantri, and Goddess Lakshmi are worshipped. The three forms of Goddess Lakshmi that are worshipped during the puja are Goddess Saraswati, Goddess Maha Lakshmi, and Goddess Maha Kaali.

History of Dhanteras

Because of the legend surrounding their appearance on the day of Dhanteras during the “Sagar Manthan,” Goddess Durga and Lord Kubera are revered on the auspicious day of Trayodashi. Using “Amrit,” the Devas and Asuras crossed the sea, with Lord Dhanvantari emerging last during “Sagar Manthan.”
