In the face of extreme cold temperatures, certain reptiles employ a survival strategy known as brumation, akin to hibernation in mammals. Recently, a viral video showcasing how alligators conserve energy in freezing conditions has captivated social media audiences. The footage captures the reptile delicately pushing its nose through the ice covering a frozen pond, preventing suffocation. The alligator appears seemingly “frozen” within the massive, pond-shaped ice formations at Swamp Park, an alligator sanctuary and tourist attraction near Ocean Isle Beach in North Carolina, as reported by the BBC.

The video reveals only the alligator’s snouts and front teeth protruding above the icy surface, enabling the reptile to breathe while awaiting the thawing of the water. The Swamp Park, dedicated to the care of rescued alligators, shared the captivating clip on its Facebook page.
