Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Convenor and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to prioritize loan waivers for farmers and the middle class instead of rich individuals. He made the appeal in a letter, emphasizing the financial challenges faced by the middle class and farmers.
Kejriwal argued that if loans are not waived for wealthy individuals, tax rates could be halved. He highlighted the tax burden on people earning ₹12 lakh annually and called it a significant concern for the middle class.
The AAP leader proposed that home loans of the middle class and debts of farmers should be waived instead of benefiting affluent individuals. He described this as a fair approach to provide relief to citizens struggling financially.
This marks Kejriwal’s third letter to PM Modi in the last fortnight. On January 19, he proposed a joint housing scheme for sanitation workers to address their housing challenges post-retirement. On January 17, he suggested a 50% discount for students traveling by Delhi Metro, recommending that both the Central and Delhi governments share the cost.
Kejriwal’s letter comes weeks ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections scheduled for February 5, with results on February 8. The AAP, BJP, and Congress are in a three-way contest, making promises to win voter support.
AAP has pledged free healthcare for senior citizens and financial aid for priests and granthis. Congress has promised ₹2,500 monthly aid to women under its ‘Pyari Didi Yojana’ and LPG cylinders for ₹500. The BJP has committed to continuing subsidies, free power for households, and free bus rides for students and senior citizens.
The debate over loan waivers for farmers and the middle class versus benefits for the rich has become a key issue in the ongoing election campaigns.
